Hibiscus Plant Care

One of the most beautiful flowers that belongs to the Malvaceae family is the tropical hibiscus. Similar flowers in relation to the hibiscus are the "hardy hibiscus", the "Confederate Rose", and the "Hollyhock". The flower is commonly found in the Pacific islands, as well as Asia.

The hibiscus is a tropical plant and therefore, the most important care it needs is to be kept warm. It needs to be kept in temperatures that remain between sixty and ninety degrees most of the time. If the temperature goes beyond this range for just a short time the plant will probably be okay, but it might lose some leaves or flower buds.

If the temperature is regularly going below fifty degrees, it will stop growing and flowers will stop blooming. Temperatures that go below freezing will hurt the hibiscus. If it stays below thirty degrees for many hours, the plant will most likely die. Even though this plant is tropical, it cannot get too hot either. If it gets above 95 degrees, the flower buds will probably fall off.

Hibiscus requires a good amount of nutrients while growing and blooming. During this time of their development it is best to feed them at least once every other week with an all purpose, water soluble fertilizer. During the winter months, you should cut back the feeding to once a month.

Out of the entire hibiscus species that are native to Hawaii, the Chinese Hibiscus is the most commonly grown breed of Hibiscus for ornamental purposes. These flowers are also typically used in the creation of leis to present to special visitors as well as important dignitaries. The natives refer to this flower as the "Pua Aloalo", which as known as the official sate flower.

The hibiscus tea has been known for many health benefits. Regular intake of the hibiscus tea has been known to prevent constipation, bladder infection, as well as prevent high blood pressure. The hibiscus flower that is made into a form of herbal tea is usually mixed with black tea and another product known as rosehip.

The location and weather will be the primary factors on determining when you should prune the plant. The main thing to remember is that you should never prune the plant during a time in which new growth will come in during a time when cold weather is likely.

After a few days, if your pollination is successful, the seed pods will begin to mature and the flower will begin to fall off leaving behind only the stem and the base of the flower. Depending on the conditions, the pods will fully mature within 6 to 14 days. You should pay close attention to these pods due to the fact that once they mature they will begin to turn brown and open up.

The flowers of the hibiscus plants in Hawaii produce come in a wide variety of colors. This is the reason why they have become so popular among visitors of Hawaii. With many colors that stand out, combined with the large size of the flowers the hibiscus became very popular for decorative purposes.
