Full name:Gray Scott
About me:I am a lifelong writer, former news editor, current teacher, and perennial student.
Sex:Male
Age:36
Ethnicity:I will tell you later
Language 1:English
Education:MA/MS/MBA
Hobbies:My hobbies are mostly writing- and reading-related: reading, writing fiction, writing non-fiction, researching odd issues on whims, game design. I am a pop-discipline buff -- pop economics, science, philosophy, whatever.
Sports:Lately, spear-throwing. (Don't ask.)
Country:United States of America
Here is how I would describe my favorite type of people::Casual, humble intellectuals -- people who are inordinately proud of being uneducated bug me about as much as people who think everyone else is dumber than they are. I prefer talking to people who are interested in new ideas, and who are capable of what Peter Elbow terms "binary thinking" -- the ability to consider two mutually-exclusive ideas without blowing up.
My favorite bands:White Stripes, Strokes, Arctic Monkeys.
My favorite books:Anything by Neal Stephenson, Tim Powers, George R.R. Martin, Guy Gavriel Kay, or Larry Niven.
My favorite TV shows:I like the programs one can find on the various learning, history, science, and Discovery channels. Sometimes I watch to shore up or refresh my memory on things I wish I could remember better; sometimes I watch to see if the program offers anything new on a topic I know well; sometimes I watch because the program is covering something totally new to me.
My favorite foods:Dim sum, a host of brand-name junk foods (e.g., In-N-Out burgers), and a large number of Italian and French four-star dining type meals, but home-cooked. I'm trying to cut back on my intake of Coca-Cola, but since I don't drink coffee, tea, or alcohol, my options for public beverages is pretty limited. Water gets boring after a while.
My favorite movies:In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, Queen Margot, Kill Bill 2, Pulp Fiction, Out of Sight, Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Beauty and the Beast, Sense and Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, Ronin, Minority Report.
My favorite things to learn:Everything. I've even learned to find math and water-board hearings interesting.
My favorite things to do on Saturday night:Learn something, read something, watch something, or play with my son.
My favorite things to do when it's raining:Read, hang out in the kitchen, sleep -- the key is not to do anything that blocks out the sound of the rain. So TV and music become second-class activities.
My favorite topics of conversation:Any topic centered around an imponderable, or something supposedly unsolvable. Politics invariably falls into both categories, as do science and economics.
My favorite restaurants:Cafe Provencal.
My favorite sports teams:Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, but only because I used to work for them.
My favorite coffee houses:Any with good hot chocolate -- I don't drink coffee.
My favorite actors and acrtresses:Pass.
My favorite vacation destinations:The Big Island of Hawaii, Oregon. The coast, the mountains, forest. Any place with nice terrain, so I can immerse myself.
My favorite holidays:Fourth of July, as I get to see most of the people I care about then. Christmas has too many stresses built into it to be enjoyable anymore.
My favorite weather:Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going about my usual business, I like a temperate, gentle climate; I hate getting wet with sweat or rain. If I'm enjoying a day indoors, I love rain and, if it's distant enough, heavy weather, though I feel for people caught under the latter.
My favorite animals:Bears, amphicyon.
My favorite philosophers:Francis Bacon
My favorite things to write about:Anything voluntary -- I used to be pickier, and would once have answered "science-fiction" or some such thing. But now I've decided I just prefer to write whatever I feel like writing at the moment, and that varies so widely that no list could sum it up. Note: I can write assigned stuff, too; but the more creative control I have over what I'm doing, the more I tend to like it. I don't think that's very unusual.
My favorite things to think about:Everything. It makes for a very full day.
My favorite role models:I've lost track, actually. I suppose I'd start with my late grandfather, Bob Scott, but then, past that, I have a very long list.
